Surface dressing usually follows a set series of stages:

- A layer of stones spread into the bitumen and rolled
- Further addition of bitumen and stones based on expected grade
- Sweep the road to clear it of loose stones and chippings
- Close down diversions, remove traffic management and reopen road
In the weeks after a surface dressing project, EA Diggers will return to sweep the road again to clear it of loose stones. After a fortnight, our surfacing contractors apply a sealant to stop stones from loosening, increase the road’s lifespan and add a darker aesthetic.
