Surface dressing is a restorative treatment that adds a fresh surface layer to a private or public road. The process itself sees our surfacing contractors spray a coating of hot bitumen from a tanker and then lay hard stone chippings. Once cured, the road surface provides better grip for traffic and is sealed to prevent further deterioration. Surface dressing extends road lifespans, stops cracking and maintains safety. It is also suitable for car parks and driveways.
Located in Billingshurst, EA Diggers covers all London, Kent, Surrey and West Sussex areas including Crawley, Guildford, Horsham and Worthing.
The waterproof bitumen layer applied during surface dressing seals the road to prevent asphalt damage. Dressing protects the underlying surface, adds to life expectancies and reduces ongoing maintenance costs. With a lower risk of accidents because of increased skid resistance, a newly laid surface can have a potential lifespan of up to 10 years even in heavy traffic areas.

Project specifications are designed around the road type and purpose. We will discuss the specification with you during an initial survey and consultation where you’ll also get to meet our surfacing contractors for the first time. Our industry experience guarantees good decisions, and we will advise you at the most professional level on binders, aggregates, benefits and lifespans.
Compared to new road construction, surface dressing uses fewer resources like aggregates, which need to be quarried at primary sources. It is also less of a disruption to the public and has a carbon footprint 75% lower than that of asphalt use. We advise resurfacing while the road is still in a reasonably good condition, and immediately if it falls below national skid resistance standards.

Surface dressing usually follows a set series of stages:
In the weeks after a surface dressing project, EA Diggers will return to sweep the road again to clear it of loose stones. After a fortnight, our surfacing contractors apply a sealant to stop stones from loosening, increase the road’s lifespan and add a darker aesthetic. Within a month, we can have white lines marked, cat’s eyes laid and the mandatory 20mph limit removed.
